Deeper Read – Rocky Outcrops

What type of rocky outcrop do you have?

  • If you have a rocky outcrop on your property, begin by mapping the area and learning more about what type of outcrop it is e.g. the rock type such as granite, basalt, schist.
  • Identify some of the outcrop features such as size, rock formations e.g. boulders, ledges, vertical flakes, rockpools and caves.

What else does this rocky outcrop have?

  • What vegetation exists?
  • What wildlife can you find? Butterflies love rocky outcrops as a breeding season site. Congregation during breeding on hill tops is called “hill-topping”.
  • Are there pest animals living in it such as rabbits, foxes?
  • Is the outcrop connected to other areas by revegetated corridors or remnant vegetation?
