Habitat and Site Selection:
Often on sandy soils (where Bulbine bulbosa is not usually found) in a variety of vegetation types. Well drained soils with partly filtered light.
Habit:
Annual to biannual herb. Fibrous roots without tubers. Succulent, strap like leaves, with yellow flowers (Sep-Dec). Similar species to B. bulbosa but generally smaller.
Seed Collection and Propagation:
Late November to late December. From seed sown in autumn, or by division in autumn. Transplants readily. Seeds germinate readily in 4-8 weeks after 2-3 month dormancy. Try germinating at cooler temperatures, such as 16C. Can be direct seeded into pots. Monitor closely as seeds shed 3-14 days after maturity. Mature seeds dark brown. Can dominate degraded sandy areas in favourable conditions. Utilised by stock. Plant has been suspected of poisoning sheep.
